Summarize the net ATP yield from the oxidation of a glucose molecule by constructing an ATP ledger that includes coenzyme production during the different stages of glycolysis and cellular respiration.
Ok….lucose to pyruvate produces a net yield of 2 ATP…..invested 2 atthe hexokinase and phosphofructokinase steps…get back 4 ( 2 each for each of the two three carbon fragments going from 1,3 bisphosphoglycerate to 3, phosphoglycerate + ATP, and from phosphoenolpyruvate to pyruvate + ATP. The two NADHs produced by each of the 2 glyceraldehyde-3P conversions to 1,3 bisphosphoglycerate will yield EITHER a total of 4 ATPs from two FADH2s produced inside the mitochondrion from the to glycerol -3P to dihydroxyacetone-phosphate conversions in te mito ( the H from the NADH is shuttled via the glycerol -3P shuttle ) or the NADHs will yield a total of 6 ATPs from 2 NADHs produced inside the mitochondrion from malate shuttled in via the malate /aspartate shuttle. So so far 6 or 8 ATPs. Each of the 2 pyruvates resulting from the two 3 carbon fragments of glucose is converted to amole of acetyl CoA via pyruvate dehydogenase with formation of an NADH ( these like all NADHs inside the mito is fuel for the ETS = 3 ATP ). Each of the acetyl CoAs condences with OAA to form citrate and begin the Krebs’ TCA Cycle. Each citrate will go through the three NAD+ dependent dehydrogenase reactions producing 3 x 3 ATP = 9 ATP, one FAD dependent dehydrogenase producing an FADH2 = 2 ATP and the one substrate level phosphorylation wherein a GDP —GTP ( equivalent to an ATP ) is produced = 1 so adding up 1 pyruvate yields 3 from PDH. 9 from NAD+ dependent dehyrogenase reactions , 2 from an FAD dependent reaction and 1 from GTP = 15 ATPs per pyruvate . Since there are 2 pyruvates produced per glucose 2 X 15 = 30
adding this 30 to the 6 or 8 ATPs produce dby a combination of the anaerobically generated 2 ATPs from glycolysis and the 4 or 6 produced by the shuttles..yields either 36 or 38 ATPs from glucose
