phenol red glucose test results
Testing E. coli, why would one get an acid/gas result for fermentation of glucose and lactose, but not sucrose

I tested E. coli in tubes with phenol red and a durham tube so I could test for acid and or gas production. The lactose and glucose tubes indicated an acid and gas, however the sucrose tube turned pink and there was no gas. Why did this occur?

It is a characteristic of the organism, made by nature.
